Series dedicated to the year 1996, Year of the Rat in the Chinese zodiac. The Chinese zodiac is a traditional classification scheme based on the Chinese calendar that assigns an animal and its reputed attributes to each year in a repeating twelve-year cycle. Chinese folkway held that one's personality is related to the attributes of their zodiac animal. The twelve zodiac signs are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.
The series consists of three gold coins, coloured, issued by the Perth Mint in 1996. The obverses depict the bust of Queen Elizabeth II, and the reverses depict scenes with Disney characters.
