Denarius of Domitian - Can't find it

The denarius of Domitian is plated.

Obverse : IMP CAES DOMITIANVS AVG P M

Revers : P M TR POT II IMP V COS X P P - Pallas holding a javelin and a shield on the prow of a ship. At her foot, and owl.

I can't find this type with such legends in RIC or ACSearch… but I probably did something wrong.

Can you help me?

Many Thanks

It's an impossible combination of titles, as Domitian was TR POT III by the time he was consul for the 10th time.     So there is no official coin that it matches exactly.    Even if we assume a minor error on the part of the forger putting TR PO III or TR POT II when intending TR POT III, the obverse legend is wrong.  So it's a forgery with an error on the reverse that has also been matched with the incorrect obverse.

Edit: just to be clear when I say forgery I mean it is an ancient counterfeit (not a modern fake).

I agree with your comments. It is quite disturbing that with such quality, they did not make the effort to have at least a correct legend. It is interesting anyway.

You can see it's a suberat (ancient fake) by the black surface on the coin. That's the lead core showing where the silver coating fell off. Counterfeits were usually made in base metals and just silver coated to look real.

I collect and deal in ancient Roman coin. In case you're looking for affordable ancient coins or need any help with the coins you already have send me a message.

When I look closer, it is possible that the actual legend is TR POT III and not II. The last I could merge with the javelin. But even in this case, the reverse with the prow and the owl is not listed anywhere.

But you are right, the obverse legend is wrong too.
