Identification: UK Junk Shop find

3 posts • viewed 88 times

My aunt bought this coin for a pound whilst on holiday in the UK. Sold as ‘Roman’. Anyone have any clues/hints for identification? Also curious about composition.

EDIT: Better photos and more data.

Clear ‘H’ on the left and 'ITA' maybe on the right? It looks like VII upside down.

Weighs 8.85 grams; diameter is about 23-24mm but might be a point or two larger on a coin without so much curvature. Also, it's 5mm thick, way thicker than a coin this size usually is.

This also increases the number of coins I have that require a specific gravity test above 1 so I'll post the results of that (when and if, you know how it is).

Thanks for taking a look.

Is that a bird ?  That would suggest Asian coins rather than Roman, the other side offers no clue as it's too far gone

I thought either a dragon or a horse. There is a clear H and possibly VII or something similar. I will post some better pictures and measurements today.

This is one of 2 coins she got; the other looks like a very, very worn Constantine III bust and is clearly bronze/copper. The fact this one is silver coloured intrigued me.
