Does anyone know the percentage of Numista users with over 250 countries catalogued? I'm at 248 and just wondered what percentage of people reach this milestone.
Dear Ogramz
Good luck, I just reached 200. Now at 201 trying to get to 210 this year. It would be easier if you just put up the countries you don't have.

I have 233 "countries" up to now, another "country" coming soon, still looking for more at least one coin for each...I find difficult African countries.
If I find a coin from a "hard-to-find country" I will exchange it only with another "hard-to-find country" or a country I don't have.
Actually I have a Crete coin (not added yet to my doubles) available swap for a "country" I don't have. Might get some Montenegro next month as well.
You can easily reduce that list if you think about what you believe is a "coin" and a "country". Let's consider the fact that :
1 - quite a few among these "countries" have disappeared and never actually been such things as "countries", many of them were colonies ; territories ; conquered, discovered or occupied lands ; etc. and you can find coins from these "places of the past" in auctions on many sites on the web.
Adding new such "countries" to you list is therefore a matter of money (I dare not say a matter of luck, these coins are too rare).
2 - quite a few others among these "countries" are supposed to exist today, but the "coins" that are made are not coins actually in so far as there're more like uncirculating items, tokens, call them what you will, but they have been created especially for collectors and for me, it's uninteresting.
Adding new "coins" to your collection is therefore also a matter of money since you can only buy these coins, no one has them in their purse.
I also used to look forward to having as many countries as possible but finally decided to concentrate on coins made for circulation and to favor full series rather than just one coin per "country".
Ya - the list wasn't suppose to be like that - I reduced it to countries I don't have and copied and pasted, but for some reason it still highlighted all the others from the previous list of all countries. My mistake; I'll try and edit and do it again.
I just tried to do it again and it did same thing; I can't figure it out so I just erased the whole list so the thread isn't so long.

I tried this and for some reason won't let me copy and paste like that. I think it's something to do with that disable menu which keeps throwing things off. Maybe you can try an example post and see if it works for you. And let me know what you think. Maybe there's a glitch in the system is all I can think of.
I took the time to go through the 142 "countries" I don't have and ended up with the following wishlist :
Austrian States
British Honduras
British West Africa
Curaçao
German East Africa
Greenland (circulation coins only)
French India
Ionian Islands
Montenegro (Nicholas I)
North Borneo - Dollar (1845-1939)
Nouvelles Hébrides
Palestine
Rhodesia and Nyasaland
Zanzibar
That means that I will never go beyond 260 different "countries", even though I don't reject the idea of buying nice non-circulating coins in the future, when I have reached my initial goal or when I am rich !
Some of them are all the same country. Like Straits Settlements/Malaysia and British Borneo/Malaya/Malaylsia, in my opinion they should be listed as one country with different categories for each name. Same with Ceylon/Sri Lanka.
for the record I only have 130 countries and now 999 coins!!
Which lucky coin is going to my lucky 1000th coin?
I also wanted coins from
The British Antarctic territory, British Indian Ocean territory, and South Georgia and the Sandwich Isles but you're talking £9 each made for collectors which takes a bit away from them, however I do still think I'll end up with them !
Well, unfortunately this hobby of ours is dependent on money...so the more money you have, the better and bigger your collection...
I don't rule out the idea of buying a coin from Palau or Niue, just to fill the missing "country" but this could be very far in the future, if I will be rich!
On the other hand, I have some coins from 4 German States and 3 Italian States, why wouldn't they count as separate "countries" ?
It's a strange setup that there were kings of these states though they were part of the Holy Roman Empire I guess.. They definitely should not count as a separate country. I collect Anglo Hannover coins since technically they fall into my collection !

I agree entirely. If the geographical boundaries remain the same then it ought to be considered the same country. I can never bring myself to refer to Rhodesia as Zim.... Zimb..... Z... Oh, bugger it..... Rhodesia. Same with Germany, pre Bismark it was seperate States, then the Empire, Weimar and 3rd Reich can all be viewed as the same country. The Federal Republic and DDR should be rightly viewed as two separate countries although I'm not sure whether the re-unified country should now be included with the pre-1946 issues.
I always used to like the common sense approach of whoever was the original editor of the NGC website although he has seemingly either taken up a drug habit or been replaced, as Middle Earth is now listed as a coin-producing country.
I have only 162 countries listed but that will rise as I'm slowly adding my collection. I originally only listed my swap list but the improvements such as the wish list have convinced me to move my collection from a stand-alone database/inventory manager to Numista. I just hope Numista stays online.
Non illegitimis carborundum est. Excellent advice for all coins.
