I could have returned with close to 100 commemorative quarters from my last trip to the US, but I had to use almost them all for highway toll because there was no dollar coin…

Of course there are dollar coins. Millions (billions) of them. I have one in my pocket right now.  We just don't like them no matter how much the Government tells us we do.

Of course – I do know you actually have circulating dollar coins, but I never got a single one in my change. If I trust the Numista catalogue, they have not been struck for circulation since 2011. So, the chance for a tourist to get even one in change is rather slim.
