I've just purchased a kilo of coins off the guy I usually buy them off and in it there was a coin that I could just make out "Tasmania" at the top, the emu and kangaroo crest and "1857" on the bottom. That mean's it's a nice big merchant's token from Tasmania, but the back is too corroded to make out which company it's from.

I did a similar thing with a beatiful Jamaica Penny with Queen Victoria's fine visage just peeking out from under some junk coins. It turned out to be a nice F+ coin but unfortunately someone had carved "J.D" on the reverse.
I'm trying to find someone with the same initials to swap it with.
Non illegitimis carborundum est. Excellent advice for all coins.

My essequebo and demerary 1 guilder, I knew it wasn't in a great star when I got it but I look at it and think I wish it was better unfortunately its a pretty scarce and expensive coin so it will do for a while.. At least I got it for less than melt !
I've been wanting a decent yet affordable example of this coin to upgrade the one I currently own.. This was purely an impulse bid... Kind of hoped someone would outbid me...
Well I received it in the mail yesterday and found out that not only did I overpay but that the coin showed a bronze luster from an old cleaning... And the bluish green tones around the rim, especially on the reverse, are someones ill fated attempts at forcefully trying to re-tone it. Perhaps by heating?
Not sure if I should stick it to this guy with negative feedback, or take it as a lesson learned..

It's a bit of a grey area Harry, the coin doesn't look cleaned and certainly hasn't been polished. If I was on 100% firm ground I'd be asking for a partial refund but honestly, unless some trick photography has been used it would be harsh to leave the seller negative feedback.
I wouldn't kick that coin out of bed. (I may be mixing my metaphors due a coffee withdrawal)
I sometimes think I'm too relaxed over the cleaning issue.

Mine must be this one and it's just from a short while ago. I really wanted that coin and was so excited when it arrived from the mail, then the huge disappointment the seller had completely cleaned of all of the nice patina from the coin and made it look like brand new . Here it is http://www.ebay.de/itm/300838359094?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

Just for reference here's the coin almost as it appears in hand. I tried to capture the luster and toning but I couldn't. The coin is actually more of a polished bronze and the un-natural bluish green toning is more colorful in hand.
Don't get me wrong, I would not throw this coin out of bed neither
I will take the advice and chalk this one up to experience..
I am content in keeping it because it's the type of coin I fancy collecting greatly and proud to own.
And I most likely won't try and ruin the seller's reputation with negative feedback, but a partial refund request may be in order. I just feel there is a stark contrast from the photo and the actual coin that should have been disclosed in the auction.

Mine would have to be my Canada 1859 1 Cent coin, it is in decent shape but someone drilled two holes in it. But I like the coin anyways they are expensive here and I got this one for 25c.
