I collect banknotes, and I am working on a coin site.
The coin site will not have a catalog, but perhaps if I could get enough members together, I could create a sister site (with a catalog) for banknotes and perhaps one for stamps.
I would need help though, that would be a very ambitious project. I can understand (to some extent) why Xavier isn't doing this.
I don't normally chat here, but I like to keep tabs on the forums a lot to check what's going on - BTW Numista has a great community!
I'd be quite interested in finding out more info on your plans for a stamp/banknote sister site. Although I only collect coins, I'm experienced with the technical aspects of what you're trying to achieve and might be able to help out, or provide advice if needed.
Please send me a message if you are serious about exploring the possibilities of this...
However in respect to Numista, and what a cool place this is, I think any plans you have should be 'complementary' of this site; so exploring some partnership or approval with Numista could be a good move first... Staying on the good side of Xavier and his administrative support team could be very helpful for the project.
If you guys are really interested in making that website, go for it now or you'll lose the want of making the website.
By the way if Dan or whoever actually makes a website for stamps similar to Numista, I'll be all in on adding stamps, since I'm an avid stamp collector as well as coin collector.

Quote: Dr. MathI'm still interested as long as you're still willing to teach. Even if it's just a small part I'd like to help.
Well the things I listed I don't know myself. Those are the things that must be done. MySQL is a database (the catalog) and PHP is the main type of web programming.
I am also interested. It is worth seeing if it is possible to use / modify the Numista site so users can add stamps in the same way as they can add coins, just amending the criteria options. We would have to get permission from site owner.
Collecting post decimalisation coins of UK, Isle of man, Jersey and Gibraltar. Also interested in collecting Spanish Euro coins.

I'm with SmartOne on 2 levels.
Level 1: I've got a crapload of Notes.
Level 2: I've seen many a website opportunity fall to the wayside and gone undone and even unstarted because there was too much talk. The desire is there, but action needs to follow. Even if it's just 1 person getting a plan together, on paper (or web). I know being a project manager for a site can be overwhelming, that was the killer in some of the projects I tried to help in.
A good program for layout stuff is called Balsamiq (http://www.balsamiq.com). It's only like $80USD. They allow for mockup page design to test layout and stuff BEFORE all the pretty graphics and stuff. This is key, functionality and layout before adding the flair.
I can offer some assistance but to what extent is up in the air until I see something. An undertaking like this is not easy nor is it a short term task. My experience with web stuff is more visual interface. No flash, PHP, database stuff. Examples of my 2 websites are at the following (Both were made with Freeway 5 Express)...
1. Who is still interested?
2. Where will we get the money from?
1. Not me. My one thin binder of banknotes and my small box of stamps are not about to expand. For me, coins are where it's at and I still don't use Numista as a personal collection catalogue.

Which part of, "I already give away banknotes as a bonus in coin swaps." did you misunderstand?
"In addition to a coin swap..." can easily mean FREE. The 1812 folders and stamps are FREE, provided that I am sending you a coin related swap in the US/Canada. Interested members just have to tell me that they are interested, during a coin swap.
I also wrote this...

I am not looking to swap banknotes for banknotes or stamps for stamps. This would also be why I am not interested in a stamp and banknote site.
Most stamps are only worth giving to the kids. The bottom fell out of this hobby, much like sports cards. I hear crown caps, beer labels and beer coasters are popular. I find the recycling hobbies amusing, like stamps, cards and beer related items. I also saw a show about fanatics collecting some kind of labels, but I can't remember what they were from. Either way, unlike the hobby of kings, these fads seem to fade with time.
Oh wait, I just remembered, it was bread labels. Not much different from stamps if you ask me, except for the pieces of bread still attached...
