Catalogue numbers from Bank Note Museum

Bank Note Museum has, for some time now, been creating catalogue numbers for new notes following on from the Pick numbers. It uses the style P#W. I've just had a request to add such a number to a note. I rejected it as I don't think these P#W numbers are “official” in the sense that no one else uses them. However, just to be sure, I thought I'd ask if anyone is aware of the use of these numbers elsewhere. If they are, perhaps we need to create a new type of catalogue number to accomodate them?

I would not mind having BNM as an online catalogue to refer to, especially if we can link directly to their pages. Especially with all the pictures of different varieties (an announced addition to numista not yet implemented) it is especially useful for notes with many signatures not yet listed here.

I would not take over the W-numbering in the Pick-listing though, only if we add it as a separate “BNM-catalogue”.

I came across this earlier this week.  As far as I can tell, the W prefix is being used by Banknote Museum as a filler for a missing P#.

In the case I saw, it was while cleaning up the Yemen section.  Yemen P#W37 at BNM, or Yemen 100 Rials here at Numista.  You can see from my screenshot of SCWPM 25th Edition (2019), that P#37 is not listed, but would clearly fall between P#36 and P#38:

Why it is missing, I don't know.  But it seems to have a place reserved for “future” SCWPM issues that we know probably will not occur.

These are BNM catalogue numbers, not scwpm P numbers. The should not be used as P references.

If numista wishes to add BNM as a catalogue reference, that is a different matter, and we would then have BNM numbers [I would have a separate set of objections to this, if it is proposed].

Scwpm had its own system of generating new numbers, especially for  older items that needed to be retrofitted into the catalogue. 
It is unlikely that BNM is a party to the system used by scwpm. As such, it may occur that these inferred numbers turn out to be inaccurate, should a future official project (by the owners of scwpm printed book) get underway to derive P references to extend beyond the current state of scwpm.

If we want numista to be accurate, we should not use the made-up numbers of an amateur website.

The correct catalogue to use for any Northern Ireland banknote is Banknote Yearbook (BYB), published every two years by Token Publishing.

This book is kept up to date, and is the definitive catalogue for new issues of Northern Ireland notes from 6 May 1929.

I agree we should not include the W numbers as SCWPM P# numbers, since the W numbers are not included in the SCWPM books.

The question is whether we want to add the Bank Note Museum as a reference catalogue. Two issues I see are:

• The BNM doesn't have their own numbering systems for most banknotes. If we add the BNM as a reference catalogue, we should probably use it only for the banknotes that are not referenced in the SCWPM and that have a W number.
• It's not possible to have a link directly to the right page on the BNM website.

 I'm happy to hear your opinions. 

T.B.B. catalogue numbers should be used - as the numismatic community is in the process of moving on from the Pick numbers, which won't be updated ever since Krause Publications went under a few years ago.

It's perfectly fine to use the Banknote Yearbook and The Banknote Book. It should not prevent us from adding more cross-references.

Online media are always a bit icky especially when currated by a single person and not an organisation. Catalogs that have print specimens that ca't be lost or altered easily are preferable.

Absolutely right. Only printed catalogues should be used, imo. And there are enough of them out there to cover banknotes.

I see there are too many reasons for not doing this.
