Hong Kong & Macau notes from their banks

Hi all,

In October I will be in HK and Macau for a few days and I'd like to get some UNC notes. In this case there are several banks that prints  their own notes (3 for HK and 2 for Macau) and I'm not sure if it's possible to just go there and get the UNC notes like in other countries. If anyone has some info about this I'd very much appreciate it.

Thanks

A few years ago I saw a post from a globe trotter collector who stated that he waited 30 minutes to an hour & checked out 4 or 5 banks in Macau in order to get some UNC banknotes.  He was very disappointed as he only got Banco da China notes (none from Nacional Ultramarino) & most were well worn.  He learned that when the notes are first issued, a lot of dealers will line up and draw most of the new notes out (to be sold).

I wish you luck!

Thanks a lot for the info, I'll keep it in mind. I won't have much time to spend in line for a few worn notes ehehehe

Nasty! Life can be so competitive sometimes.

You're welcome.

Personally, I would try your exchange outlet before you leave. I asked mine if they had any new notes for our trip to the DR last December & they did (& they were far better than any note I came across when we got there). This has always worked out for me but its limited (you can only take what they have). It's true I had to pay a small premium but it was cheaper than the same notes on eBay (which has been my other source, especially for small places like Macau). Whenever I turned to eBay I usually got much older notes unless they were replacements, special serial numbers (radars) or errors.

If you travel say mid January 2024, you may have a better chance in getting UNC banknotes over the the bank counters.
