China Spade Coin, Genuine

7 posts • viewed 136 times

Hello,
I am absolutely clueless when it comes to these. I pulled this from an estate collection that had 365 B.C. Riping Money written on the envelope.

I've tried some searching and became more confused than when I started.

It is bronze, appears to be cast, weighs 21.8 grams and is approximately 47mm tall x 33mm wide at the base.

I tried getting a few pics of the edge, I hope they are clear enough.

Any help with attribution, age or authenticity would be appreciated.

Thank you

Hello 🤖

Without pictures, it will be very difficult for anyone to help you. Could you please post clear pictures of each side of your item?

Please note that this is an automatic message. Feel free to ignore if it is not relevant.

I accidentally posted it before the photos were attached.

hello it looks like a spade coin from ancient China from the Wei Kingdom from -376 to -222, but I couldn't tell you if it's a reproduction, I'm attaching a link but it's in French, you'll have to use Google translation to translate into English.

It looks like Hartill# 3.44, which is not yet added on Numista. These type of spades are very rare coins, usually many hundred of euros. Your's does look a bit too good. You could also check Zeno.ru, which is a good source of Chinese coins. My opinion is that this one is not authentic.

I can't imagine why someone would drill a hole into it unless they knew it was fake.

Here is another source with photos for you to compare.  https://www.calgarycoin.com/reference/china/china1.htm#zhou
