Elizabeth I hammered coin id

9 posts • viewed 278 times

Hi is this an Elizabeth I half groat (i‘m pretty sure it’s London mint)? It has the 2 dots rather than the rose. It also has a dot on the ear. The diameter is 17mm.

Could it be a penny or other denomination, or do the dots mean it’s always a half groat?

I gave the dimensions - 17mm. Did you read the post or is this an automated response?

There’s nothing wrong with the lens, that is the condition of the coin and I don’t want to devalue it by cleaning until I have an id.. I’ve cropped the pics but not sure that will add much help.

I read the post, yes, and it shows up that you didn't read the forum policy! So please give the diameter, thickness and alloy? All the white spots still looks like dust on the lens.

Just to politely clarify, I have read your policy. The reason I didn’t state the alloy is I believed the hammered reference in the title would have made it obvious. If not I apologise, I can confirm the coin is silver. The reason I didn’t detail the thickness is a hammered coin is extremely thin and I wouldn’t want to give an inaccurate measurement. However, if you feel it would be essential information I would say 1 to 2 mm. The background spots are part of our worktop. I will in the future take pics on a different surface so as not to confuse / mis-represent. I hope this clears up any misunderstanding and thank you for your time. Great web site!!

You will need to determine the mintmark to work out the year of issue.

Thanks so much for the id that’s really helpful.

Your Assumption is correct your½ Groat is from 1585/1586 mm Escallop (79) Sp# 2579 and its weight should be around 1g can you please confirm as this will give a positive definition, if possible, as giving the weight and all the coins attributes helps immensely.

I have a two QEI ½ Groat one in VF that is mm Ornate A .

Hi Ian,

Thanks so much for sending this info over. The coin weight is correct. I have a second coin that is very similar and I will check it’s weight to see if it’s the same.
