QEII coins circulation

Hi all,

Here in the UK some people seem to start to panic as soon as the Queen died.

I was in a supermarket & a woman was at the checkout talking to the cashier and said “I usally pay by card but I want to get rid of these notes with the Queen on while I can still spend them”.

The notes & coins won't be removed from for a long time so why panic. If we had not gone decimal we would probably still have had George VI coins incirculation.

Saying that, I noticed that they have started to remove older 10p pieces from circulation. I got some 10p's from the bank and when I checked the sealed bags from the clearing bank they were all the later “magnetic” shield reverse type, there were no older "non-magnetic" lion reverse type.

Thanks, Merv

Any comments ?

Technically if decimalisation didn’t happen, the oldest date on the bronze coinage would be 1860 and 1816 for silver (Apart from the Florin which is 1849), plus 1937 for three pence coins.

I have also noticed the reduction of pre 2011 5p and 10p in circulation due to the cash centres slowly removing them. But they are still fairly common in bagged bags that were deposited by customers.

Same with the Bronze 1p and 2p pieces for 100 1ps I average around 5-15 non magnetic types per bag (and most of them are the highest minted years eg 1971)

For banknotes the Queens polymer banknotes they will remain in circulation for many years to come and we won’t see Charles III banknotes until mid 2024 and they would circulate along side each other, until all QEII notes are worn out.

Hi to whoever is reading this. Did you know that TYPEWRITER (on a QWERTY keyboard) is the longest word you can type using only the letters on one row of the keyboard.

Coins with Queen Elizabeth II's portrait will remain legal tender in all of the Dominions, the British Overseas Territories, & the Crown Dependencies.

I am looking forward to 2023 - when Australia, Canada, & the U.K. will put out King Charles III's first coins.

We here in New Zealand won't get King Charles III's coins in circulation until around 2024 or 2025 at the earliest.

Aidan.

It is likely countries such as the UK, Canada and Australia would put Charles coins into circulation next year and smaller counties and territories would have to wait longer (except the BUNCS).

Well I‘m unsure about banknotes because in the U.K. the designs will be revealed later on this year but according to Sky news we won’t see them until mid 2024. But I’m doubtful Charles would appear on any other commonwealth banknotes (Except commemoratives printed in low numbers) because for the last 15-20 years the Queen has disappeared from all but one denomination of a banknote series.

It comes at a time that the Bank of England and Scotland would withdrawn the last of their paper banknotes (Not sure about Northern Ireland and as far as I know the paper £1 will stay) on the 30th of September so I’ll hunting for the the paper £50 , £10 if anyone has decided to hand them in with the other notes (even though they went in 2018) and possibly some Scottish or NI banknotes if any local banks and post offices have them.

Northern Ireland does not have 1 Pound notes in circulation anymore.

5 Pounds is the bottom denomination there.

The Crown Dependencies have 1 Pound notes - Guernsey, Isle of Man, & Jersey.

Sorry I meant Scotland.

Hi to whoever is reading this. Did you know that TYPEWRITER (on a QWERTY keyboard) is the longest word you can type using only the letters on one row of the keyboard.

Scotland last put out a 1 Pound note in 2001.

Again, 5 Pounds is also the bottom denomination.

Scotland has 100 Pounds notes, as does Northern Ireland.

I know the 1 pound note (for Scotland) ceased being printed and is not widely used but it has been exempted from any withdrawals because it hasn’t been mentioned when the paper £5 and £10 were removed in 2018 (2017 for England £5)

and for the outgoing £20 and £50 notes in two days time.

Well in some context you are right about the £5 being the bottom denomination in common use and I’ve haven’t heard about the withdrawal of the  £100 notes yet.

Hi all,

I wonder how long we get to use up all our stamps with the Queen's head on, some company's have probably got dozens of sheets of 1st. & 2nd. class.

I have not got many left to use but I won't be buying any more until  I run out of those.

Merv,

  Have a read here;

Hi all,

That's useful to know, thanks.

All I can say is that the Post Office will make a huge profit in one hit on that date because most people either won't know about the swap or (like me) won't be bothered to do it & have to by the new stamps anyway.

I bet they get a lot of complaints. What they should do is let you take them to a PO counter & swap them, but that would be too easy & there wouldn't be half as much profit.

Merv

A nasty hit from the Post office there!
