I've managed to twist the arms of my parents and my girlfriend into getting me coins that I wouldn't be able to afford normally, although the girlfriend has spent £60 and I quote "I won't be spending any more money on your stupid coins for Christmas - you need clothes and that". lmao, got £100 off the parents though and so far have these...

I believe I have enough budget for one more coin - we will see what materializes in the coming day though !
You're so lucky to get coins as gifts; I am so green with envy towards you right now... Well for me when it comes to coins I like to make it x-mas several times a year. And today was one of those occasions I treated myself to some numismatic gifts.
I came home with several pounds (as in Kilos) of Ye Olde copper, my favorite kind. I lost count but close to 150 coins in all. From around the world but mostly British, enough to keep me cataloging for days..
Among my large and heavy haul were these English favorites.
Farthings; 1754 George II, 1822, 1830 George IV, 1847, 1848, 1855, 1867 Victoria.
1/2 Penny; 1854 Victoria.
Pennies; a huge 1797 George III, and 1853, 1854 Victoria.
The 1853 has a few interesting stampings on her that say LONDON - not sure what that is about.
Ha ! I haven't been flush this year and it's been hard collecting. Really desperate for work in this part of Britain.. Tides are turning though and fingers crossed I'll be in work by Xmas then I can buy some more coins ! Then I'll get my Jeep Patriot and all will be good haha
Haha we are so similar it is frightening me Mark !!!
First I see we enjoy the same coins.
Then I read in another post you're a plumber? Guess what - I am an electrician, my fellow tradesman..
I haven't exactly had a stellar year either, things have been rough in the States for construction for the last 5 years at least. This year I worked for close to 6 months, been unemployed since July, but I still manage to budget for my coins. And I shop wisely at shows; the coins I buy are deeply discounted. I maybe spent about $40 for all those coins at a coin show today.
You mentioned a Jeep Liberty, I drive a Jeep Grand Cherokee.
And I have something in the works that should have me back to work before X-Mas also my friend..
Scary !!!-
Wow that is fairly freaky ! I've only worked about 2 months this financial year (since April) that's why I've given up on the plumbing & gas for now and have headed for factory work. Have my medical for Nissan motors UK on Tuesday so that's my escape route, but I'm also doing my heavy good class 2 licence. We will see what happens but I think that I got so much money to spend as I please, to make me feel better about it, I doubt many 22yr old lads get that for Xmas Lol. Doubt I will next year - all going well I will be out with the GF ! Jeep Liberty over there is it ? Cool - I haven't put the Grand Cherokee out yet but I just love the Patriot! My dad has had a Chrysler Neon for 7 years now; it's a W reg (2000) and all it has cost him is £95 (albeit for a track rod end ). That's not bad over the time !
Well, I'm getting a smile (since Japanese people don't celebrate Christmas).
Just kidding, well we do exchange gifts, but there's a different name for it. My grandfather, who's living in Japan right now, will send me uncirculated sets of the Japanese coins every year since some of the coins, like the 1y, 5y, and 50y can only be collected through the uncirculated sets. Luckily they're cheap (around $20) although the proof sets are like $80. Hopefully he'll also be able to send me some Gatsby too. Not the hat, but the really expensive hair wax that I use every day.
This is a little early, so when the time comes, happy holidays!

That's alright, although I went to a catholic school it was pretty diverse we had Muslims and other islamics and they took on the westernised culture and although they didn't celebrate Christmas but they exchanged gifts. I know it is early lol but I seen some cheap good coins and asked about it and was offered the money outright I wasn't gunna day no ! Lol
If you're クリスチャン you'll probably celebrate Christmas in Japan, but there are little to no churches in Japan so Christmas is not a common holiday there. You probably don't want to mix up Western religion and traditions in Japan 'cause you'll look bad.
It's really about getting together and remembering all the great things that have happened that year, well, that's how I've seen it.

Just won myself an Island of Sultana keping and the Sierra Leone company 1 cent piece that's my Xmas sorted now. The reason I tried to do this early is before Royal Mail take on the Xmas temps and over the festive period more packages seem to go "missing" hence why I wont be swapping over Xmas.
Bad aint it ? I hate getting clothes.. it's like I could buy that any time of the year.. Some of these coins only come up once in a blue moon and are never as cheap as what they go for. I think it's the time of year though most people are saving for Xmas pressies etc so the bids aren't as frantic. The last 3 bikanir state rupees I've watched have all gone for over £30 - I won this for £16 ! And the Sierra Leone coins seem hard to get; I've seen them on coin sites but never eBay UK. In America they're always Buy It Nows - the only site I've seen the 1 cent on wants £95
Haha loving the flags ! I'm suprised it's of the same name because all of our Vauxhalls are Buicks over there ! I really haven't a clue what that car is, but if I were to hazard a guess I would say a Reliant Scimitar ? Can't really remember what they look like but I seem to think the rear quarter being strange around the window like that, but saying that I think the badge also looks like some sort of Lancia - obviously not a Delta Integralle. Time period would be about right before they got banned from the UK lmao they all look similar back then - my dad had a Daytona yellow mk3 Cortina 2000egt
Quote: BartweegieI'm thinking about buying myself a better metal detector, but first I need to pluck up the courage to ask farmers for permission.
You're a brave man if you do, I can remember the farmers from the village where I grew up - there's no way I would ask those nutters for permission. Sorry to any farmers I have just offended - I'm sure you don't all spend your days sitting on barrels of cider getting drunk and shooting rats.
I'm getting the best Christmas present of all. A 5 day holiday away with my wife and no kids. Better than any material posession. Grandma and Grandad will be a bit frazzled by the time we get back though!!
god awful is what it is ! the only old cars worth having are the vauxhall lotus carlton, vauxhall cavalier calibre, ford escort mexico, mk2 escort rs2000,escort RS1600i, escort and fiesta RS turbo, escort and sierra cosworths (sierra sapphire cos & rs500) and the capri 2.9 and i guess a mini but not with a mini engine must be either a honda V-Tec or a Hayabusa Turbo engine !
oh and the defender i love 'em never changed since the 60's lol

True enough, my first husky we named after a famous Brit. Ringo was his name.

I like this line in the article.
Quote: pnightingaleI have owned many cars since then and can now afford to drive in relative luxury but no other car has ever been minein the way that little Datsun was.
This last line reminds me of the last line in the movie "Stand By Me".
don't you just love it how people get attached to their bangers ? when i get my jeep i'm gunna be on the lookout for a cavalier mk2 calibre - they are stunning cars in red
Mustang is like hens teeth mate ! Not that the mk2 cav calibre is a common car but I have more chance of picking up a calibre project car, I'm
Not totally into my American cars I like my English vauxhalls really as there reliable and easy to work on lol
Haha.. You forget we were the original world police, it's you rebels who drive on the wrong side - as for the engine once it gets a nice C20LET in it it'll go like stink.
Quote: Mark240590At least our 1.3's can corner at 40mph plus !
I guess you're right, frequent rain, winding roads, I wouldn't want to slide off the road and into a castle at every turn either. Personally, I'd love to visit and drive (slowly) all over the countryside in an Isetta, vintage style. That would be fun.
"What are you guys getting for Xmas ?"
How would anyone know - is it what do you hope to get? I thought it was up to Santa Claus / Father Christmas what anyone gets ?! Actually this year I do hope to be given some slippers, as my current ones are getting somewhat worn out ...
Quote: ZacUKHow would anyone know - is it what do you hope to get?
I couldn't answer it either. Usually, if I get something, it's a surprise. I do not buy myself Christmas gifts. In about a month or so, I'll be able to tell you what I'm getting for others.

Hmm, when thinking of it, good point and true. I guess in keeping within the theme of coin collecting, and all of the upcoming holidays that involve "giving and receiving", not just Christian X-mas but the others as well. And since "getting" can imply yourself or for others. One can presume that anything (coins) "acquired" during this season can be labeled as "gift" even if only in spirit......
Getting a budget and getting what you want is a much better way when you are 22... Lol
Beats getting awful presents that they think are great and wearing that awkward smile using it once to show you have used it keeping it out until February and then throwing it in the loft
Back to cars and although its not related to the topic it is free chat so lets run with the two topics its working so far ! Lol
You lot wouldn't be able to cope with windy wet roads and roundabouts that's why there's no good American race drivers they get spoilt too much the only guy I sorta rate is block.. Give me a 1.6 16v Peugeot 106 GTi anyday an I can show you how to skid around corners keeping your speed up and leaving much bigger more powerful cars in its wake.. The only problem is being French you could leave it and 10 mins later you get passed by the car which didnt brake down ! HA

I'm no expert on races and champions when driving around an oval is the only task at hand.
I do remember an overall unimportant and little known guy in his prime. As I recall, he was very frustrated and got disqualified because he had some Canuck giving him a hard time. If you are only 22 or younger, keep in mind, this was a small series of races, barely known circuits of little importance. I believe his name was something Schumacher. I guarantee that 1996 and 1997 made him wonder, if he shouldn't be making shoes instead.
Michael.. He's a German they get all of the fun with their auto-bahn's ! He's came back to F1 a couple of years back but he hasn't been half the man he was. You see glimpses of the one-time great but he's not there totally.. I prefer BTCC and WRC personally which is why I'm considering an Impreza because I will take it rallying

I like to think that the Ferrari had something to do with his success.
Strange, that Sir Francis Owen Garbatt Williams saw fit to supply the Canuck with a Renault engine, putting him at, as you put it, a "French" disadvantage against the powerful Schumacher driven Ferrari.
It makes perfect sense for coin collectors to pick out their own presents for Christmas. What would you do with all the gold plated state quarters that your mom buys you from the TV coin shows?
Non illegitimis carborundum est. Excellent advice for all coins.
Make Numismatics Great Again!
I do not expect anything for Christmas. I am a veteran who lost my legs in Afghanistan. I have sold all my valuable coins to pay medical bills. It is a struggle to buy the basics. After nearly 25 years in the military, I live in a dump of an apartment. Thinking about Christmas is depressing.
