British Fourpence from 1702 vs 1834?

6 posts • viewed 125 times
Greetings, from Colombia, South America. I am new posting to the forum.

I am being offered one of these Fourpence coins, each for $150.000 Colombian Pesos ($37 USD/ £27 GPB/ €32 EUR).

One is from 1702, and the other from 1834. Between these two, which one would you chose? Would this be a good price considering the condition?

Thanks in advance.

Of course it's my money, my choice. But I am writing here for a reason. I can make a more informed decision with the expertise of forum members on their knowledge on these two specific coins; instead of an extremely thorough, extensive, and substantial reply saying Your money, your choice ;).
To get a relative idea of the comparative values, we can check the NGC website for book values. These values are often higher than actual trading prices, but we can compare them to each other.

For the 1702 fourpence, personally I would grade it as maybe VG (this is of course somewhat subjective). I see that NGC lists the book value of a VG specimen at $15.

For the 1834 fourpence, it is in a higher grade and personally I would grade it somewhere near VF. NGC lists this coin in VF with a book value of $30.

So if you are being offered either one for $37 both the prices appear somewhat high to me, but the 1834 coin appears to be the better value.

Thank you sir! Had no idea about the NGC website. Looks like it will be a very valuable resource for me now on for comparing other coins :).
