Very interesting article. The stories of the early settlers of America are fascinating. They worked much harder to keep alive in that time and place than anyone does today, and used far less money to get what they needed than we do to get lots of stuff we don't need!

The land I live on was farmed by Scotch-Irish immigrants from 1740s until fairly recently. I sometimes put a shovel in the ground, planting roses and such, and hope to turn up a treasure, but of course the entire 20th century lies topmost - :~ so what I do find is rusted bottle caps, aluminum beverage can pull tabs (remember those?), golf balls, and other such detritus.

This is just a witness of how young the US is as a nation, and she still has a lot to learn from her older siblings.

A really cool find!
How do we know it was dropped in the 17th century.

Maryland was only founded in 1636 for the Roman Catholics and named after Henrietta Maria the Catholic Queen of Charles I whose religion annoyed many Puritians and Protestants and was part of the reason for the Civil war.

Baltimore is named after the Lord Baltimore from the town in Ireland, where many Catholics came from. It was an oasis in a sea of Protestantismania (I am a Catholic, although gay and non practicing).

But it could have been dropped by a traveller or a walker in 1896 who brought it from an English migrant or a coin shop! Is the contest actually 1600s and when in the 1600s, if its worn - it could have been dropped around 1674 or later as coins were in short supply then and no doubt missed by its owner.
I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.
