Description

Since 2017, the 2 euro cent coins of the Republic of San Marino feature Porta San Francesco, the most renowned gate in the city walls, commonly referred to as the “Porta del Paese”.

Originally built in 1361, it underwent a major transformation in 1451 with the addition of an outer gate and a raised crenellated tower. Beneath its arch, the gate preserves, among other elements, a graffitied inscription outlining the rules for entering and exiting the fortified city.
