Description

On 16 August 1897, Adrien de Gerlache de Gomery (an officer in the Royal Belgian Navy) departed as the first Belgian Antarctic explorer to the Antarctic region.
In January 1898, he reached the continent aboard the ship de Belgica. DeBelgica spent a long time in unknown coastal waters and became trapped in the pack ice for 13 months. As a result, the multinational crew was forced to become the first to experience an overwintering within the Antarctic Circle.
Eventually, the ship returned to Antwerp on 5 November 1999.
