In 2012, the United Nations General Assembly declared March 21st as the International Day of Forests, with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of forest heritage, whose protection is vital for the survival of our Planet.
The €5 coin features on its reverse a design of a tree formed by two crossed hands, with fingers branching upwards, symbolizing the essential support of humanity towards forests. The canopy is composed of different leaves, representing the variety of trees around the world.
On the coin’s obverse, the deep symbiosis between Mount Titano, its civilizations, and its forests is depicted by the three Towers, reinterpreted as symbolic trunks topped with laurel leaves (representing glory) and oak leaves (representing strength), inspired by the Republic’s Coat of Arms, with the addition of the olive branch (representing peace).
