W 1967 roku cena srebra gwałtownie wzrosła, osiągając 260 franków za kilogram w sierpniu i 350 franków za kilogram w marcu 1968 roku. W tym czasie wartość wytopu monet 1⁄2, 1 i 2 franki była o około 46% wyższa niż ich wartość nominalna. Niemniej jednak, wartość nominalna monety o nominale 5 franków nadal utrzymywała się nieco powyżej jej wartości wytopu wynoszącej 4,38 franka. Szwajcaria zaczęła doświadczać poważnego niedoboru gotówki z powodu nielegalnego topienia 1⁄2, 1 i 2 franków. Do pewnego stopnia liczba 5 franków w obiegu również spadła z powodu gromadzenia.
Aby złagodzić kryzys, rada federalna przeszła na stop miedzi i niklu dla 1⁄2, 1 i 2 franków w 1968 roku. Co więcej, rada federalna potajemnie zatwierdziła również bicie miedziano-niklowych 5 franków, ale początkowo ukryła 33 871 000 sztuk wybitych w 1968 roku. Oficjalnie w 1967 roku wybito 5 532 000 sztuk srebra. Aby uniknąć dalszego niedoboru gotówki, szwajcarska mennica wyprodukowała dodatkowe 8 285 000 srebrnych sztuk w 1968 roku, ale z datą 1967, oraz 8 637 000 srebrnych sztuk w 1969 roku, po czym miedziano-niklowe sztuki z datą 1968 zostały ostatecznie wprowadzone do obiegu.
