(en) The Khazar Khaganate was a powerful Turkic state that existed from the Steppes of Central Asia, the Caucuses, and into Eastern Europe. The Khaganate served as a buffer between Byzantium, the Arab Caliphates, and the nomadic peoples of the Northern Steppe. Due to its status as a powerful commercial empire, Khazaria had a rich polyethnic populace, combining Tengrists, Christians, Muslims, Pagans, and Jewish diaspora. The rulers of Khazaria converted to Judaism around the 8th century AD.
