(en) Having been first recorded around 260, the Gepids were a traveling tribe, as well as allies with both the Goths and Huns, fighting alongside the later for many decades. Around 454, a year after Attila the Hun (434–453) died and a civil war broke out amongst the Hunnic Empire, the Gepids united with a few other tribes to destroy the Huns, and the Gepids built their own kingdom, becaming the new dominate power. While a kingdom, the Gepids often fought against the Ostrogoths, with the city of Sirmium switching hands between the two of them regularly. While they reached their peak in 537, Gepid power began to decline in 552 after the Lombards began attacking. In 567, with the help of the Avars, the Lombards were able to destroy the Gepid Kingdom.
