The earliest of the extant hemidrachmae of the ‘Abbasid governors of Ṭabaristān are the few extant coins minted in the name of Rawh. b. H.ātim in 146 A.H./763–764 A.D. and 147A.H./764–765 A.D. These coins are epigraphically unique, being the earliest Ṭabaristān hemidrahmae where the name of the governor, as well as the date and the place of minting, are indicated on the reverse in Kūfi c rather than Pahlavi writing. Besides, the coins, unlike all the other ‘Arab-Sasanian hemidrachmae of this province, are dated according to Hidjra, and not the Ṭabaristān era. The time of the rule of the ‘Abbasid governor in Ṭabaristān Rawh. b. H.ātim has so far remained uncertain. Analyzing available narrative and numismatic sources, the author defines the chronology of this rule with more accuracy, which throws a new light upon one of the most obscure periods in the history of Ṭabaristān of the 8th and the 9th centuries – the time between the death of the last spāhbed Khurshīd, the son of Dādhmihr, and the beginning of the rule of the last ‘Abbasid governor Khālid b. Barmak in 149 A. H./766–767 A.D.
