Abstract

The article publishes thirty four Byzantine gold coins (and mentions two Arabian dinars) from the Slavyansk hoard in the Hermitage collection. These coins constitute about the seventh part of the complex of eighth century coins, several of which are kept in private collections and 207 belong to the museum of Krasnodar. The article relates the discovery of the hoard, the history of its study (I. Anfimov, A. Semenov, F. Fueg) and the circumstances of the purchase by the Hermitage Museum – thanks to A. Semenov and I. Parusimov – of 34 copies from private persons. The hoard is characterized as the greatest and richest complex of coins dating from the early iconoclastic period and as an important source for the study of graffi ti and imitations of Byzantine coins. The author writes of the importance of the further study and the complete publication of the Slavyansk hoard.
