Polish-German War of 1939, Czech-Slovak Legion, designs for decorations, Kazimierz Pacewicz

Abstract

Decorating foreigners with orders and decorations in modern times was an important element of diplomatic protocol. It was done differently during periods of war conflicts. It depended on mutual relations and the joint fight against the enemy. Decorating each other with orders and decorations was not only an element of the diplomatic game, but also a link of brotherhood in arms and the joint fight against the enemy. The same was true for Polish-Czechoslovak relations during World War II. The forgotten history of the Czech-Slovak Legion during the war in 1939 is connected with an unknown project of creating the Cross of the Czech-Slovak Legion in Poland by the Polish government in exile. And it was at this point that the project of creating an honorary badge commemorating Czechs and Slovaks (including Ruthenians) fighting alongside the Polish Army in September 1939 saw the light of day. The first of the newly designed commemorative decorations of the Polish Government in Exile was the "Commemorative Cross of the Czech-Slovak Legion in Poland in 1939". Its designer was the painter Captain Kazimierz Pacewicz. The French campaign of 1940 and the quick defeat of France by the Germans pushed the issue of the Czech-Slovak Legion Cross in Poland in 1939 into oblivion. Despite both governments being in exile in England, the idea, doomed to failure due to the reluctance of the Czechoslovak president, was not revived during further war operations. The chance to commemorate the symbolic common brotherhood in arms of both armies on the battlefields of the Polish campaign of 1939 disappeared. Capt. Pacewicz's project was forgotten.
