Abstract

There are numerous researches written by the Polish and Ukrainian historians on the history of money circulation and the monetary system of Rzeczpospolita and in particular the Ukrainian lands within this state. On the one hand, the researches are based on a tangible material traditionally – coins. On the other hand, the written recordsare not usually covered in the above-mentioned studies. In general, there is the lack of such studies on discussing Western Ukrainian territories in the first half of the 18th century. Due to the coverage of written records, it is possible to make some corrections regarding the factual material onthe history of the Ukrainian numismatics of the early modern era significantly. The purpose of the research is on basis of thewritten records to contribute to the established ideas about money circulation on the territory of Rzeczpospolita, in particular, in the Ruthenian Voivodeship in the first half and middle of the 18th century. The Results and Conclusions. According to the written records from hrodskykh and zemstvo Acts and the other documents on money circulation and coin denominations on the territory of the Ruthenian Voivodeship, it is possible to come to the conclusion that there was extremely uneven circulation of moneyamong different strata of population. The peasants and townspeople had an insignificant amount of money in everyday life as they were in an extremely difficult economic situation due to chronic indebtedness, hence, they used small exchange denominations: tymf, trojak, szóstak and money. There are no written records on their use of the “coining thalers”. However, we should not leave behind the idea of getting such a full-value silver coin by the poor population. The situation looked different among the nobility and the wealthy middle class (patricians) and merchants. They had considerable sums of money. It was possible to come across all denominations in equal measure of both silver and gold coins in their wallets. Although money was considered to be as a means of increasing wealth primarily among the wealthy population. It was not practised to put money aside, hence the amount of saved money was insignificant.
