Abstract

The purpose of the article is to analyze the theoretical, methodological and source studies problems of numismatics in connection with the development of digital technologies, in particular the processes of digitization of numismatic sources and digitalization of numismatic research, to determine the informativeness, representativeness and reliability of the digitalized source base, as well as to outline promising areas of digitization and digitalization in numismatics. Scientific novelty. This is the first study to examine the relationship between the processes of digitization of numismatic sources and digitalization of numismatic research. The analysis of the current state of digitization and digitalization in numismatics conducted in the article showed that there is a significant set of digitized numismatic objects, which are divided into several groups: virtual collections of museums, libraries, and other scientific institutions, numismatic auction platforms, numismatic forums, virtual numismatic catalogs and reference books. A row of regional and international digital numismatics projects have made a significant contribution to its development. New sources of information have emerged, including materials from online forums, the use of which requires a special methodology and allows preserving information about coin finds (types of coins and topography of finds) for science. An important component of digital numismatics is the automation of the process of coin identification, and today's numismatics has a row of mechanisms for solving this problem, the leader of this process being the numismatics of Ancient Rome. The article proves that special software for automating the stamp analysis of coins is in urgent need of development, although at this stage, numismatists already use digital content, in particular, graphic editors Adobe Photoshop and CorelDraw. Among the trends that determine the general direction of development of digital numismatics, a significant place is occupied by the means of monitoring Internet resources and the video format, which complements the text format, allowing you to “feel in your hands” the numismatic object under study. Thus, “digitization” and “digitalization” in numismatics, as well as in other fields of knowledge, is not just a fashion trend, but a fundamental process that, thanks to digital content, forms a new level of numismatic research and requires the development of new methodological approaches to both the collection and analysis of information and a critical attitude to digital sources.
