Abstract

A distinctive series of Barcid gold coins has hitherto been dated to the early period of Carthaginian expansion into the Iberian Peninsula under Hamilcar and Hasdrubal. A new analysis of these issues suggests that they may have been minted in the first decade of the Second Punic War as an emergency coinage.
