Abstract

A new type of Abbasid dirham from Central Asia, with highly unusual iconography, has recently been discovered. It was minted in the turbulent year 195 H / 810-11 AD. The iconography of the coin is compared with examples from the art of the pre-Islamic and early Islamic periods in the lands of the caliphate, and possible interpretations are discussed.
