Abstract

Just before the deposit of the Auriol hoard ca 475 BC, the Massalia mint chose a new standard and a number of series differing from the archaic coinages. This so-called postarchaic period continues the issues with multiple patterns but various evolutions are perceivable and foretell the shift in 465/ 460 BC to the systematic double type coinages characteristic of the preclassic period. Based on recent discoveries, this work presents all of the groups of postarchaic obols and hemiobols known at present.
