Abstract

As has often been noted, the great collections of coins from the Greek cities of the Black Sea share the common characteristic of having been the result of private efforts by a few brilliant enthusiasts, distinguished by their great moral and intellectual integrity. Around 1900, the largest European collection of North Pontic Greek coins belonged to His Imperial Highness Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich, and discussions regarding the publication of this collection had been initiated with Berthier de la Garde, but without success.
The great upheaval caused by the Great War, and especially by the Bolshevik insurrection in Russia, led to the disappearance (for several decades) in Romania of the first major donations made by M. C. Sutzu (those from 1911-1912), which contained thousands of coins from the West Pontic Greek cities. The reconstitution of his collection after the Great War and his donations after 1919 took place in a particular context characterized by the dispersion of major collections, due to economic reasons, belonging to the Russian aristocracy in exile and their placement on the Western numismatic market.
In 1930, M. C. Sutzu purchased from the Cabinet des Médailles of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France a group of 504 North Pontic Greek and Asia Minor coins from the collection of Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich, as indicated in the inventory of his collection (Louis Ciani lot). Consequently, the 512 coins we are now publishing come almost exclusively (419 of them) from the collection of His Imperial Highness Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich, constituting one of the most important lots of this famous collection.
