- ruled until his death in September 1743. He was the founder of the city of Jaipur and initially a powerful Mughal vassal who later asserted his independence, even performing ancient Vedic sacrifices to declare his sovereignty. He was, however, forced to pay tribute to the Marathas after a defeat in 1732.
