Legenda "DIS IST MEIN LIEBER SOHN" odnosi się do fragmentu ewangelii drugiego Matteo ("Dies ist mein lieber Sohn, an dem ich Wohlgefallen habe", Matthäus 3, 17 - Questi è il mio figlio prediletto, nel quale mi sono compiaciuto), nawiązującego do boskiego głosu, który rozlega się z nieba podczas bitwy o Jezusa w Giordano z inicjatywy św. Giovanni Battista.

I Kerzendreier erano gettoni a tema religioso (solitamente riportanti l'immagine del Cristo), coniati a Norimberga nel primo XVIII secolo. Erano coniati in biglione o argento ed originariamente haveve un controvalore di 3 kreuzer: di qui il nome - letteralmente pezzo da 3 per candele. Czasami nazywano je również Taufpfennig, lub pfennig dla bitwy: infatti veniva used for l'acquisto delle candele (Kerzen) dell'Altare oppure come offerta (con una candela) al momento del Battesimo; era spesso legato alla candela or immerso nella cera.
W tradycji ludowej uzyskanie Kerzendreier chroni noworodka przed siłami mężczyzny.
