The 1960 date on the edge on 1960 coins is located precisely below the 1960 date on the obverse. That indicates that the obverse, reverse and edge were struck all at once, while on coins with incused lettering the edge is created in a different phase. The three little vertical lines on the edge between ‘★★’ and ‘1960’, between ‘ΒΑΣ’ and ‘ΙΛΕΙΟΝ’ and between ‘ΤΗΣ’ and ‘ΕΛΛΑΔΟΣ’ indicate that three die sections were used to create the entire edge. Such triple little verticle lines can for example also be found on the Swiss 5 Francs coins with raised edge lettering.
Remarkably, ‘Falireas’ below the buste on the obverse is written as ‘ΦΑΛΙΡΕΑ⥌’ and not as ‘ΦΑΛΙΡΕΑΣ’. This angular ‘S’ as well as the different ‘A’ and ‘Λ’ are used in several archaic Greek alphabets.
