The Ol Chiki script was created by Pandit Raghunath Murmu in 1925 to provide the Santhali language with its own distinct and scientifically designed writing system. It was developed to accurately represent the phonetic structure of Santhali, which earlier scripts failed to capture effectively. Ol Chiki enabled widespread literacy among the Santhal community and became a powerful symbol of cultural identity, self-respect, and linguistic independence. Today, it remains central to Santhali literature, education, and cultural expression.
The Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, unveiled a ₹100 commemorative coin and a postal stamp to mark the Centenary Year of the Ol Chiki Script created by Pandit Raghunath Murmu today, on February 16, 2026 at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi. The event was attended by the Union Minister of Culture & Tourism, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union Minister for Tribal Affairs Shri Jual Oram, Chief Minister of Odisha Shri Mohan Charan Majhi, and members of the Fagun Foundation. It also brought together members of the Santhali community, scholars, activists, writers, and well-wishers who participated in the historic celebration, making the occasion grand and memorable.
