Built from 1077 onwards on the orders of Archbishop Gebhard, the fortress acquired its current appearance around 1500. It was intended to protect the principality and the archbishops, and was never captured by foreign troops. An emblem of Salzburg, it is the largest fully preserved castle in Central Europe.
