The United Jewish Appeal, a combination of several separate fundraising organizations, was set up in the United States in 1939. It grew into an organization with many achievements to its credit. It has distinguished itself by giving aid to Holocaust survivors, in helping to maintain communities in poor countries, in financing the rescue migration during the War of Independence, and mass immigration after the State was established. The United Jewish Appeal continues to be active in many areas of Jewish need throughout the world. Its income is divided by an agreed formula between Israel, the Joint and the Fund for social welfare activities of American Jewish communities. The United Jewish Appeal held its annual convention in Jerusalem in November 1976 in an effort to emphasize the ties existing between American Jews and Israel, its developments claiming the lion's share of their contributions.
