(en) Crowned bust of ruler right, crescent with dot above crown.
In front of the face is a Sogdian legend - "King of Bukhara", behind the head is an Arabic inscription "al-Mahdi", with an inverted Arabic inscription "al-Fadl lillah" where the three dots of al-Mahdi's issues are typically found.
Script: sogdyjski
Lettering:
al-Mahdī
al-Fadl lillah
pwx'r xwb k'n'
W centrum monety znajduje się ołtarz z głową Ahura Mazdy po prawej stronie.
Po obu stronach ołtarza znajdują się postacie mobedów (pomocników).
Al-Fadl must be al-Fadl b. Sulayman al-Tusi, who was appointed governor of Khurasan in 166 (782-83). Although he stayed on, this issue would have ended in 169 (785), when al-Mahdi died.
There does not seem to be any other coinage naming al-Fadl.
This is an seemingly unique variant of drachm citing al-Fadl as governor that has the governor's name inverted on the figure's chest. It is theorized that this is the first Bukhar-Khudah Arabic issue of Samarqand.
