During Grandmaster Vilhena's 14 year reign the naval war againts the North African infidels and Ottomans never stopped, with big success for Malta. This was acknowledged by Pope Benedict XIII which gifted Vilhena a silver gilt sword and a velvet casque embroidered in gold and enriched with pearls. This was seen as a significant acknowledgement by Vilhena, who commissioned this medal to commemorate this event.
