The tokens of the Trade Unions, Agricultural Unions, and Livestock Farmers' Unions of Catalonia, whether or not they bore a specified monetary value (and were frequently modified by overprints, die-cuts, etc.), were not used to purchase or pay for any merchandise. They were, in fact, deposit tokens, market tokens (mostly from the Central Market of Barcelona, ​​the former Borne) that were given as a guarantee for the return of boxes of fruit and vegetables. When a retailer purchased merchandise in a wooden box, they paid a deposit for the box, and the wholesaler gave them one of these tokens as a guarantee. This way, when the empty box was returned, along with the token, they could prove that it belonged to a specific wholesaler and not another.
