Uważany za lidera naturalizmu, jest jednym z najpopularniejszych francuskich powieściopisarzy i jednym z najczęściej publikowanych, tłumaczonych i komentowanych na świecie.

Zola sportretował społeczeństwo Drugiego Cesarstwa w całej jego różnorodności, podkreślając jego surowość wobec robotników (Germinal, 1885).
