Wilhelm był piątym synem Jana I z Avenses, który był hrabią Hainaut w latach 1247-1256, i młodszym bratem hrabiego Jana II z Hainaut. Zastąpił Enguerranda II de Créqui (1273-1285) na stanowisku biskupa Cambrai i został zastąpiony przez Gui II z Collemède (1296-1306).
