Lorenzo Bellesia in the article “Le madonnine contromarcate di Mantova” (The countermarked madonnine of Mantua) published in Panorama Numismatico 148 of January 2001, reveals the meaning of the countermark with a small head of Virgil present on the obverse of several specimens: this countermark was applied in an attempt to stem the large mass of fake coins (probably issued by the nearby mint of Novellara) that had poured onto the market.
