Who was Chacho Peñaloza
Ángel Vicente Peñaloza, known as "Chacho Peñaloza", was born at the end of the 18th century in Malanzán, a town on the High Coast of the Sierra de los Llanos, in the south of the current province of La Rioja. He became one of the most important leaders in Argentine history.

Peñaloza was one of the main bodyguard chiefs of Juan Facundo Quiroga, who promoted him to the rank of major. Due to his differences with the Unitarians led by Juan Manuel de Rosas, Peñaloza was appointed commander of arms of the province. The following year, President Justo José de Urquiza promoted him to general.

In 1862, Peñaloza led the resistance with a large army, although he was defeated on several occasions. After signing an armistice with the government of Bartolomé Miter, he rose again in May 1863.

Despite having surrendered, he was brutally murdered on November 12, 1863. His head was displayed on a pike in the Plaza de Olta as a warning to other possible insurgents.
