1911 obverse die varieties:

In common with most of the coins of 1911, the farthing comes in Hollow Neck and Flat Neck varieties. The Flat neck is ever so slightly scarcer.

Obverse 1A Above 'B.M.' the neck is hollow;
Obverse 1B Above 'B.M.' the neck is flat (slightly more scarce);

1914-15 obverse die varieties:

Part way through 1914, the obverse design was changed very slightly in order to combat ghosting and the two designs can be identified by close examination of the spacing of the T's in 'BRITT'. There is a very scarce type of 1915 farthing that displays the earlier Close TT obverse, almost certainly a mule.

Artificial darkening:

Due to the fact that on occasion uncirculated farthings had been passed off as half sovereigns, those struck between 1897 and 1917 were produced with an artificially darkened finish. The method adopted was to use acid fumes to darken the coins giving them a 'blackened' appearance, however on some coins this has resulted in shades down to light brown.
