This coin was the first coloured commemorative $2 Coin issued by the Royal Australian Mint. It commemorates Remembrance Day, the 11th of November, where at 11am one minutes silence is observed to remember all of the fallen soldiers of all of the wars. There are three different versions of this coin.
The coin shown above is the pad printed, red coloured, “C” mintmarked version which was not released into circulation. It was issued in a folding coincard.
A special version of the $2 commemorative circulating coin featuring a non-mintmarked coloured red poppy was distributed through the RSL Red Poppy Appeal for a donation of $10 to the RSL, (Returned Services League). Some of these non-mintmarked coins did find there way into circulation.
As the Mint was planning to release Australia's first ever commemorative $2 coin, the Mint thought that this theme would be particularly relevant for all Australians, and would help Australians remember the fallen on 11th November. The Mint partnered with the RSL because the poppy is synonymous with the RSL's 'Poppy Appeal', which provides support to Returned and Ex-Servicemen and their families.
Australia Post also released a pad printed, red coloured, NCLT version with the "C" Mintmark in a PNC issue 14 of 2012.
A plain version of the coin without the red poppy was also released into circulation. (See link below)
Australia Post released a two coin PNC, Issue 13a of 2014, that included a 2012 Red Poppy "C" Mintmarked coin and a 2014 Green Peace Dove Non-Mintmarked coin, in very limited numbers (1,111)
The RAM then released a 2018 dated version of the non-mintmarked Red Poppy Coin in the 30th Anniversary of the Two Dollar Coin (1988-2018) Set:
