(en) Danish whalers have settled in Greenland since the 18th century and established bases there. In 1776 Den Kongelige Grønlandske Handel (KGH) got the trade monopoly over Greenland. The KGH also took over the political administration of Greenland. The state-owned company was founded in 1774 and was based in Copenhagen. Before the introduction of paper money, whale blubber was the determining factor in barter. For example, a pound of gunpowder was worth two pounds of bubbler. The first paper money was credit notes issued in 1801, which were filled out by hand. None of these have survived. From 1803 the KGH issued printed banknotes. The KGH issued the banknotes for Greenland in changing designs until the 20th century.
