Duńscy wielorybnicy osiedlali się na Grenlandii od XVIII wieku i zakładali tam bazy. W 1776 r. Den Kongelige Grønlandske Handel (KGH) uzyskał monopol handlowy na Grenlandię. KGH przejęła również administrację polityczną Grenlandii. Spółka państwowa została założona w 1774 roku i miała siedzibę w Kopenhadze. Przed wprowadzeniem pieniądza papierowego, tłuszcz wielorybi był decydującym czynnikiem w wymianie barterowej. Na przykład funt prochu strzelniczego był wart dwa funty bąbelków. Pierwszymi papierowymi pieniędzmi były banknoty kredytowe wyemitowane w 1801 roku, które były wypełniane ręcznie. Żaden z nich nie przetrwał. Od 1803 r. KGH emitowało banknoty drukowane. KGH emitowała banknoty dla Grenlandii w zmieniających się wzorach aż do XX wieku.
