Maurycy był następcą swojego ojczyma Tyberiusza II. Po wielkich zwycięstwach nad Sasanidami, poniósł wiele porażek na Bałkanach i nie mógł zapobiec instalacji Słowian i Awarów. W 602 r. został obalony przez spisek wojskowy. Został zabity podczas próby ucieczki przed Chosroesem II.
