Released to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the first bimetallic £2 coin, it was issued individually in Royal Mint packs (12,844 sales), in trade packaging for third parties (13,998 sales) and in 3-coin commemorative Effigies set (1,698 sales). The coin has a special privy mark on the obverse and is also dual dated with the 1997 date on the reverse being the first year of issue. The coin was also struck in silver proof, silver piedfort and gold proof.

This strike was issued after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II but the design continued to bear the image of The Queen, in support of His Majesty the King's ambition for a sustainable transition. This ensured minimal environmental impact as the designs, tools and packaging for these products had already been produced.

Some of the 2022 dated coins issued in the three-coin triple effigy set were accidently issued without the privy mark.

The non-privy marked coins have been acknowledged by the Royal Mint in a letter as below.
