(fr) Le terme de Cabildo vient du latin « capitulum » (signifiant : « à la tête de », mais aussi « réunion de l'autorité supérieure »). Capitulum provenant lui-même de « capite » (la tête). Le mot Cabildo désignait donc l'institution qui prenait en charge toute l'administration d'une cité, le concept existait en Espagne, et fut apporté par les premiers conquistadores dès le début de la colonisation de l'Amérique.
Le Cabildo est le lieu où a été signée le 25 mai 1810 l'indépendance de l'Argentine par le Général San Martin lors de la révolution de mai. Il est situé en face de la Plaza de Mayo (place de mai).
Aujourd'hui, c'est un petit musée de quatre pièces où l'on voit ce qu'était Buenos Aires à l'époque coloniale.
